CUSJ Spring 2007 issue published by CU Libraries

The Columbia Undergraduate Science Journal's Spring 2007 issue was published today by the Columbia University Libraries (Official Publication Site).

Representing countless hours of work over a period of months by the Journal's 120-member staff and 16-member Faculty Advisory Board, this issue contains a breadth and depth of scientific research rarely found in any scientific publication.

Including not only outstanding work performed at Columbia, but also work from researchers at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Massachusetts General Hospital, this issue truly represents outstanding undergraduate scientific scholarship. The publication of the Journal's second issue represents a reinforcement of the CUSJ's long-term committment toward showcasing the highest undergraduate scientific scholarship at Columbia to New York and the world. The CUSJ's open-access format means that it is freely viewable on the internet, available to students and faculty around the world to read and reference.

Call for Abstracts for the 3rd Annual 2007 Spring Undergraduate Research Symposium: April 6, 11AM-4PM, 555 Lerner Hall

The 2007 CU SURS, cosponsored by Engineering Student Council and the Columbia Undergraduate Science Journal, is now accepting submissions for presentation in March at Columbia's Lerner Hall. Students from any school within the Tri-state area are eligible to submit a manuscript.

The 3rd annual Symposium solidifies the CUSJ's commitment to excellence in undergraduate scientific achievement at Columbia; the tradition will form a lasting legacy of excellence in undergraduate scientific research at Columbia.

The Symposium is a forum for New York City university students to showcase their research in a presentation format. Abstracts selected for presentation will be published under the umbrella of the Columbia Undergraduate Science Journal in an open-access format. Students' abstracts selected for presentation will be published on the Symposium Official Publication Site as the Proceedings of the 2007 CU Spring Undergraduate Research Symposium.

CUSJ Spring 2007 Issue Call for Papers (Now Accepting Submissions)

Advance Deadline: Friday, December 8, Midnight
Final Deadline: Monday, January 22, Midnight

Submissions to the CUSJ will be received from undergraduates who are students at Columbia, have recently graduated from Columbia, or students from other universities who have performed significant research at Columbia.

The Journal's Editorial Review Board and Faculty Advisory Board will participate in the double-blind peer-review of each and every paper submitted to the CUSJ. The CUSJ is committed to advancing scholarship across all scientific disciplines at Columbia, and this call for papers embodies this comittment.

CUSJ Adds '06-'07 Staff, Doubles Peer-Review Capacity

Representing the Columbia University Medical Center, Graduate School of Arts & Science, Columbia College, The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, Barnard College and the School of General Studies, the 2006-2007 CUSJ Staff truly reflects the trans-institutional nature of the CUSJ and reinforces its comittment to publishing the most outstanding undergraduate research manuscripts .

These outstanding new members of the CUSJ's editorial and operational staffs will continue to represent the rich tradition of undergraduate scholarship in the sciences at Columbia and at the CUSJ. The CUSJ's rapid growth exemplifies the widespread campus interest in the publication.

With this staff addition, the CUSJ has more than doubled its peer-review capacity. These exceptional students will be primarily responsible for the CUSJ's hallmark double-blind peer-review process.

Library of Congress Awards CUSJ ISSN Numbers

Reinforcing its comittment to a long-term representation of undergraduate scientific scholarship at Columbia, the Library of Congress has awarded the Journal ISSN numbers for reference in directories and repositories.

The CUSJ can be referenced in its online form (1932-7641) and in its print form (1932-765X) as all other professional-level scientific journals are referenced around the globe.

CUSJ Staff Applications Available for UG and Graduate Students

The CUSJ is looking to add outstanding undergraduate and graduate students to its staff. Please find the application to join here.

Reflecting a focus on long-term organizational sustainability, the CUSJ has released applications for both its editorial and operational hierarchies. Applications are due on September 15 and October 9, 2006.

2006 CUSJ Spring Symposium: 12:30-4PM, April 28, 555 Lerner Hall

The 2006 CUSJ Spring Symposium, sponsored by Engineering Student Council, will be held in Lerner Hall 555 from 12:30-4PM on April 28, 2006, on Columbia's Morningside campus. All students and faculty interested in science at Columbia are encouraged to attend. The Symposium will feature presentation and poster format exhibits with opening and closing remarks from notable Columbia faculty .

The Symposium will feature opening remarks from Professor Ron Prywes, Chair of the Journal's Faculty Advisory Board, and closing remarks from a prominent Columbia university scientific investigator. CUSJ Adds Diverse, Talented Editorial Review Board

The 42-member Columbia Undergraduate Science Journal Editorial Review Board represents all four of Columbia's undergraduate colleges: Columbia College, Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, Barnard College, and the School of General Studues. Additional members of the board are graduate students on both Columbia's Medical Center and Morningside campuses.

The Journal's Editorial Review Board will be responsible for facilitating the CUSJ's double-blind peer-review process. Their judgments will form the credibility base on which the Journal will begin its lasting legacy in the sciences at Columbia.

CUSJ To Be Published by The Columbia University Libraries

The Columbia University Libraries will publish the first issue of the CUSJ at the Journal's Official Publication Website, located at http://cusj.columbia.edu/cusj .

This announcement of backing by The Columbia University Libraries reflects the steadfast commitment Columbia University has demonstrated to undergraduate scholarship in the sciences. Additionally, this support reflects the professional-quality submissions that the CUSJ expects to field when selecting manuscripts to be included in its Spring 2006 issue.

The Journal will furthermore be archived by through the CU Libraries as part of the publication process.

CUSJ Spring Symposium Details Announced

The Symposium will feature scientific abstract presentations given by Columbia students with ongoing or completed scientific research. (PDF for interested students). The Symposium will accept abstract submissions during Spring 2006.

To accompany its annual publication, the CUSJ is pleased to announce the launch of the CUSJ Spring Symposium, an annual meeting in Low Library which will showcase presentations encompassing ongoing and completed research by Columbia students.

Students who are selected to present an abstract will have that work published under the umbrella of the Columbia Undergraduate Science Journal in an open-access format. For details, please contact Charlie Zairis, the CUSJ Spring Symposium Coordinator.

President Bollinger, Provost Brinkley Support the CUSJ

The staff of the CUSJ is pleased to welcome the support of Columbia University President Lee C. Bollinger and Provost Alan Brinkley.

Recognizing the potential for the CUSJ to afford opportunities to Columbia undergraduate and graduate students, Columbia University President Lee C. Bollinger and Provost Alan Brinkley have become official supporters of the Journal. Their support will catalyze the further development of the Journal toward our Spring 2006 publication date.

Preliminary Publication Website Launched

The address where the CUSJ will be published in Spring 2006 is http://cusj.columbia.ed/cusj .

The Journal will be published in a open-access format, available to students and faculty around the world to view and reference. This address is where submitters can create a login and submit manuscripts in the spring, and where members of the Editorial Review Board and Associate Editors will participate in our double-blind -peer-review process through our own online publication system.

Editorial Review Board, Assoc. Editor Applications Available

The CUSJ is looking to add graduate and undergraduate students to its Editorial Review Board.

Please find applications to join the Editorial Review Board here.

The Editorial Review Board members will be responsible for the annual double-blind review of submitted manuscripts. Students interested in joining the Editorial Review Board should have demonstrated interest and scholarship in a scientific field and should be interested in being at the heart of the CUSJ's credibility; the Editorial Review Board is the foundation upon which the CUSJ will build its credibility.

Associate Editors, through a significant time commitment, will work directly with the Founding Editor, will be responsible for knowledge of multiple scientific disciplines, and will distribute submitted manuscripts through the Journal's double-blind peer review process. A limited number of Associate Editors will be chosen to represent the Journal on its highest administrative level.

Please refer to the corresponding forms for additional detail about the responsibilities of each member of the CUSJ staff. The CUSJ staff welcomes applications from Columbia students. We are looking forward to meeting all prospective board members.
